I stumbled upon a small rural hut on Rusinga Island, which sits in Lake Victoria near mainland Kenya. I saw a tiny thatched-roof hut, no larger than 12’x12′, where 60 young children stood shoulder to shoulder. They sang joyfully in their native Luo dialect as if they were anticipating a visitor. How did they know I would discover them? And how did they embody such genuine happiness despite how much they lacked? …I planned my trip to Africa to enjoy a vacation and to photograph children to paint. Without a doubt, my purpose was more deeply rooted; I was meant to help these beautiful children.
Since I was their first visitor, they wanted to name their school the N.A. Noel Preschool, the honor was mine, as was the desire to offer them a better life.
